Rock Program Assistant FAQ
Q: Who can assist in the rock program?
A:
Anyone who has completed the course in the past. Also experienced climbers who are new to the area and want to get involved in the program
and eventually become instructors.
Q: Who should I talk to if I want to assist?
A:
Contact [mail] to add your name, address and phone number to the assistant instructor list.
Q: What are my tasks and expectations?
A:
Generally help out instructors with lesson plan. Watch student close to the cliff edge and keep them safe. Check that students are always anchored.
Demonstrate lesson tasks and answer student questions.
Q: How often do I need to come?
A:
Come as often as you can and sign yourself in. You are most welcome and appreciated.
There is no minumum attendance but try to advise weekend leaders when your coming.
Q: Is there any formal training / preparations?
A:
There is no mandatory training to be an assistant but it is helpful to have some sort of training night to prepare new assistants
and discuss the transition from student to volunteer. Sometimes one of the senoir leaders is asked to provide a lecture and Q&A session.
Watch the schedule for dates and times. It will be if an instructor is able to plan it.
Q: Can an assistant sign off tasks in the green book?
A:
An assistant may not sign off any skills in the green book. It is for instructors only. You may sign off attempted climbs though.
Q: How do I become an instructor and/or trad leader for New Seconds?
A:
A climber must be recommended by another active instructor and later approved by the mountaineering committee.
The person doing the recommending must have first hand experience climbing with the individual they are recommending.
