"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
Black & White Rocks is the name for a group of rock outcrops hidden in the south-\
eastern corner of the Middlesex Fells reservation. \"Fells\" is the Saxon word for \
\"rocky, hilly tracts of land\" which describes the region well. Good hiking and mountain \
biking can be had here. This 2,600 acre reservation straddles 5 towns (Malden, \
Medford, Winchester, Stoneham and Melrose), so finding the right crag can be a \
greater challenge than scaling it, but most routes are within 5 minutes of the road. \
The larger crags are described here, but a great many additional boulder problems are \
spread throughout the area. Explore and who knows what you will find. If you are a \
frequent visitor, you might consider joining The Friends of the Fells \
(<a href=\"http://www.fells.org\" target=\"_blank\">www.fells.org</a>). \
</p>";

var collegeHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
College Rock was the favorite haunt of a few men who successfully kept it a \
secret for years during the 1970s - until the publication of the first edition of <i>Boston \
Rocks</i> (LaForge, 1987). A favorite of a new generation, it is one of the best crags \
around... if you can get off the grounds. If you can't get off the ground, please don't \
take over the climb all day; the local etiquette is to share ropes, so that others can \
flail as miserably as you. The cliff faces west, is 32 ft tall and can be quite buggy for \
a short period in the spring. Long slings and/or gear are needed for some anchors. \
Descend around either end. One outlying boulder is recorded here and others are \
scattered throughout the woods. \
</p>";

var crowHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
Crow Hill has some of the best climbing in Massachusetts, from easy topropes to \
harder lead climbs, including a few that can go two pitches in length. The southeast-\
facing gneiss cliff is 650 ft long by 80-90 ft tall and is known for hard routes with \
somewhat difficult grades; people fall on 5.7s and break bones here. be careful, but \
don't be put off; there are also quality climbs for the beginner and crow Hill's \
exquisite cracks provide the best opportunity for leading in the Boston area.\
</p><p>\
Because of its excellent hard climbs, Crow Hill is one of the few areas where first \
ascent information has been recorded. \"In the mid-sixties, while the big aid routes \
of Yosemite lurked in the back of everyone's min, Crow Hill became a practice \
ground. <i>Cro-Magnon</i>, <i>Jane</i> and <i>The Recidivist</i>... fell to the hands of eastern climbers \
who distinguished themselves in The Valley\" (Hendrisk & Streibert). Crow Hill first \
ascensionists of the late '60s and early '70s include Henry Barber, Sam Streibert, Bob \
Anderson, Steve Arsenault, Steve Hendrisk and Ed Webster. There has been a recent \
flurry of extreme trad leads by Peter Vintoniv/Tim kemple and Barry Rugo/Mark \
Richey. Fixed gear is from the first ascents or replacement of first ascent gear.\
</p><p>\
Some cracks stay wet in spring and after a rain, and or rare occasions an ice route \
may form here in the winter; see the photo of David Breashears on Crow Hill ice in \
his book <i>High Exposure</i>. Beware of loose soil at the tops of climbs; pebbles occasionally \
rain down from hikers above and some climbs are dirty after rain. If there are \
bolts for toprope anchors at the top of a climb please use them, as the trees are taking \
a beating. You may need long (10-20 ft) slings where there are no bolts.\
</p>";

var castleHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
The cliffs at Castle Rock are 20 ft tall with another 20 ft of third and fourth-class rock \
above. The climbing is on mostly near-vertical faces and cracks with a few lower-grade \
gullies. The rock is shaded in the summer but gets sun in the winter and can be \
pleasant on mild winter days. The trees and boulders that provide toprope anchors \
can be easily reached by scrambling up gullies or by scrambling down from the top.\
</p>";

var denHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
Den Rock Park, at 80 acres, is the largest park in Lawrence. It is named for an east-\
facing rock outcrop over 100 ft long and 25 ft tall. The \"Den\" itself is a 3 ft wide \
crack near the north end of the rock. According to local lore, the crack has been used \
as a \"den\" by wild animals... and maybe by the Devil himself.\
</p><p>\
The rock in this area is rough in the fingers. the routes on the right side of the cliff \
dry out more quickly than those on the shadier left side. There are routes inside the \
Den, which is cool on a hot day. Some bolted toprope anchors may survive, but very \
long slings or gear may be useful to build anchors. There has been considerable \
bouldering activity recently, and problems from V0 to V7 have been established. \
Many of the routes have \"sandbag ratings\"; climbs may be harder than rated.\
</p>";

var hammondHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
Hammond Pond Reservation has a scattering of rock outcrops that offer some of the \
best bouldering in metro Boston as well as beginner toproping. The rock, Roxbury \
pudding stone, is the Massachusetts state rock; this conglomerate of delta bottom \
debris offers a unique climbing surface dimpled with glacially worn pebbled and \
pcokets where the pebbles are missing. Routes range from low-angle slab and \
crack climbs at the lower Wall to the overhanging test pieces at the Alcove and \
Temple Wall. While some routes can be led, most are toproped or bouldered. Long \
slings (20-40 ft) are required for toproping at all areas.\
</p><p>\
Hammond Pond has several classic walls; Lower Wall, The Alcove, Temple Wall and \
Pusherman's Wall are all worthy destinations. The less-visited Pinnacle Area \
includes a number of interesting formations and is worth a visit, especially when the \
other areas are crowded.\

Sometimes called \"The Cradle of the American Industrial Revolution\", the Blackstone \
River Valley is home to the Blackstone Canal, which carried freight and passengers \
on horse-drawn boats between Worcester and Providence from 1828 to 1848. The \
climbing is at Lookout Rock, which is also known as King Philip's Rock. The cliffs \
offer a collection of 40 ft tall easy and moderate climbs, most of which can be led. \
Horizontal pockets make solid cam placements that are not clearly visible from the \
ground. There are also a few very hard overhanging cracks and boulder problems.\
</p>";

var nahantHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
The sea cliffs at Fort Ruckman are hard to find and it's even harder to park, but once \
you get here, great views of the Boston skyline and harbor make the trip worthwhile. \
The cliff takes a pounding during winter storms, so beware of loose rock in \
the spring. gear or very long slings are needed for anchors. Beware of poison ivy.\
</p>";

var purgatoryHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
There are competing geological theories for the formation of Purgatory Chasm. One \
theory by Dr. Skehan of BC is that the chasm was scoured out by a sudden release \
of dammed-up glacial melt water near the end of the last Ice age. Another theory is \
that the chasm is a keystone fault - a break in the rock that forms at the crest of a \
fold. the chasm runs north-south for a quarter of a mile with walls of Milford gneiss \
that rise as tall as 50 ft. The chasm includes a complex jumble of cliffs, squeeze \
chimneys and free standing rocks. Although the state park prohibits climbing on \
Sundays and holidays from mid May to mid October, it's a fun place to go for a \
scramble, even if you don't climb.\
</p>";

var quincyHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
Granite from the Quincy Quarries can be found throughout the U.S., as it was prized \
as a building and monument stone for over a century. Sometimes called the \
\"Birthplace of the Granite Industry\", Quincy is also one of the first places in the U.S. \
where crag climbing was used for mountaineering practice, sometimes in still-working \
quarries. Robert Underhill's unpublished 1926 <i>Rock Climbs Around Boston</i> mentioned \
\"One Course of 150 feet, worth roping for. One face climb, 120 feet, difficult and exposed\". Today the quarries are partially filled with water or landfill material, \
so the longest climb is 85 ft. The abandoned quarries are known for their sometimes \
blank face climbs requiring good footwork and lots of shoe rubber. the grades are \
tough, a half to a full number grade below what you might expect.\
</p><p>\
Most of the routes are found in two quarry holes that once made up the Granite Railway \
Quarry. Immediately to the east is Swingle's Quarry and the remnants of Badger's \
Quarry are east of that. Short cliffs and small quarries are found throughout the \
region. The rock is dark granite that can be quite hot in the summer and pleasantly \
warm in the winter. The area dries out very quickly. Many popular routes have glue in \
toprope anchors; other climbs require medium to long slings.\
</p><p>\
Most of the cliffs are designated by letters, clockwise from left to right as you walk \
in from Ricciuti Drive (A Wall, B Wall, C Wall...). The walls after C Wall have been re-lettered \
in this guide to allow for the addition of walls that became easily accessible when quarries were \
filled in the late 1990s.\
</p>";

var rattlesnakeHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
Rattlesnake Rocks is a string of 30 ft tall granite cliffs situated along a ridgeline high \
in the Blue Hills Reservation. the separate outcrops with their excellent views of \
forested hills combine with the 20 minute approach hike to provide the ambiance of \
being alone in the woods. Rattlesnake's popularity is due to the density and variety \
of climbs. Overhanging jug fests, delicate faces, cracks and classic flaring chimney \
offer a fine sampling of climbing techniques. While some climbs can be led, toproping \
is the norm. With enough sling, convenient anchors can always be rigged from \
trees; a light rack can improve some anchors. Ratings range from 5.1 to hard 5.11 \
and many climbs have distinct variations, providing an ideal situation for parties of \
mixed abilities. The richness of climbing opportunities at Rattlesnake provides \
something new for everyone, time and again.\

var redHtml =
"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
It's not close to Boston, but the setting and quality of climbing make Redrock \
a favorite of many. Plus it's only a few minutes from Woodman's restaurant in \
Essex, where \"fried clams were invented\". Redrock offers a variety of climbing. A \
remarkably blank granite slab provides practice in the lost art of friction climbing; \
cracks, corners and flakes add variety at both ends of the slab; and steeper climbing \
is available in the woods surrounding the main crag.\
</p><p>\
Oz, Down Under, plateau Boulder and Lost Boulder are in the woods just east of Redrock. \
A few other areas can also be accesses from the redrock parking area, including Mount Ann and \
Dykes Pond to the south and Cavalry Boulder Field to the northeast.\

Woods reservation, which abuts Bow Ridge Reservation to the south and southeast.\

"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
Gloucester is touted as America's oldest seaport. Settlers began arriving in 1623 from \
the cathedral City in England, which gives Gloucester its name. The settlers set up \
fishing stages on the land that is now Stage Fort Park. The park's main climbing crag \
is a large rock with a plaque carved into it, memorializing the founders of \
Gloucester. the presence of the plaque has paid dividends. The rock is now lighted, \
so night climbing may be possible; but stay off the plaque.\
</p><p>\
Stage Fort Park is a historic site. It has an information center, which is part of the \
Essex National heritage Area and is open May through October. the park consists \
of Half Moon an cressy's beaches. nearby amenities include rest rooms, a privately \
owned restaurant open to public and a playground. Visitors can bring grills \
for cookouts. Dogs are allowed in the park but not on the beaches. During the season, \
there are outdoor concerts and storytelling. If it's raining, and you can't climb, \
you can go visit Rocky Neck Art Colony, which is the oldest continuously working \
art colony in the United States.\

"<h1>Overview</h1><p>\
Waitts Mountain Park is a Malden municipal park. The park has suffered from \
teenage drinking and poor maintenance in the past and there is glass everywhere. \
The crag is approximately 30 ft tall, 270 ft long and offers the warmth of a western \
exposure for afternoon spring and fall climbing. The crag has two dozen lines rated \
from 5.4 to 5.9, only a few of which are listed here. Most of the routes were originally \
developed in the late 1970s and many have newer (late 1990s) bolt anchors at \
the top. At the time of publication, there was discussion of installing a new glue-in \
toprope anchors. very long runners and small to medium gear will do for toprope \
anchors for the rest of the lines.\
