Holiday Awards Nominations Needed
27-Oct-2009

Each year the Mountaineering Committee hosts a gala climbers' holiday party the first Friday in December at which we present climbing awards both frivolous and serious to recognize the accomplishments of our climbing companions.

Do you know of someone who has done something worthy of sharing for some fun public humiliation? Maybe "smallest rack" or the ever anticipated "screamer of the year"?

Get your nominations to our award artist Susan Clark so she can have them ready for the annual Holiday Party on December 4th. Submit nominations to [mail].

Check out last year's awards for inspirations.

Matt Segal Climbing Presentation, in honor of Micah Dash
28-Sep-2009

The Harvard Mountaineering Club will be hosting Matt Segal, acclaimed alpinist and rock climber on Thursday, October 8th in the Fong Auditorium from 8-10pm. The Fong is located in Bolyston Hall in the heart of Harvard Yard. Matt will be talking about his climbing trips and first ascents in the Bugaboos of British Columbia and hard-grit first ascents in England.

Additionally, the show will be in honor and memory of the late Micah Dash, a close personal friend and climbing partner of Matt’s. Micah came to Harvard to give a talk last year, and everyone really enjoyed getting to know him and hearing his inspiring stories. As a club we were all very saddened to hear of Micah’s death last summer on Mount Edgar in China along with partners Johnny Copp and Wade Johnson. As a result, this year, in addition to his own climbing feats, Matt will also be talking about his climbing with Micah over the years. Proceeds from the event will go partly to a new climbing grant in Micah’s name, as well as to the Access Fund and American Alpine Club.

Attached is a poster for the event. Feel free to post one around your office, dormitory, climbing club, etc.

In addition, there will be a $5 entrance free to cover the cost of the program.

In Summary:
What: Matt Segal climbing talk/slide show
Where: Fong Auditorium, Bolyston Hall, Harvard Yard
When: Thursday, October 8th, 8pm-10pm
Cost: $5 per person

Are Nalgene bottles safe?
30-Jan-2008

There has been much discussion recently of the possible health impacts of Nalgene-type water bottles. This article appeared in "Environmental News Network" today.

A follow-up question sent to the author of the article:

Q: Is the release rate only faster when boiling water or hot water is in the bottle, or is it that once exposed the release rate is faster forever?
A: Can't say if it is forever but we tested if it continued to release into a new volume of room temp water and the release was elevated for this next incubation.
